History
Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) began in Romania in 1995 as an initiative by Peace Corps volunteers to address the emotional and educational needs of adolescent girls, in 2000 Bulgaria started its own camp GLOW. In 2004 to increase the camps sustainability the Non-Governmental Organization GLOW was created in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. GLOW is a female run and oriented NGO which continues its mission to educate and empower Bulgarian girls, helping them fulfill their potential as future leaders. GLOW accomplishes this goal through yearly camps where girls partake in interactive and informative sessions about various topics that affect their lives such as, self-esteem, decision-making, tolerance, health issues and Human trafficking, human and women rights and leadership culture. During these camps approximately 50 campers gather from all over Bulgaria to grow and learn together from a staff of 25 highly motivated and trained GLOW alumnae who facilitate lectures, activities, and group discussions while also working with guest speakers who demonstrate first hand how GLOW girls can become leaders . In its ninth year more then 500 Bulgarian girls benefited from the lessons they learned during camp but so have their families, friends, and communities through the establishment of regional GLOW groups where GLOW alumnae facilitate community discussions about topics they learned about at camp.
